Airwolf/CBS/USA-1984-1988 (Injured Eye, Limps)
Alex Cord starred as Archangel, an ultra-secret government operative featured on the aviation adventure AIRWOLF/CBS/USA/1984-88.
Michael Archangel (Code name: “Archangel”) is the director of the F.I.R.M. with a level 5 clearance. His real name is Michael Coldsmith Briggs III. He dresses in white, carries an eloquent walking cane, and wears glasses with the left eye lens shrouded in a black tint. He sometimes wears a white eye patch.
He is assisted by several gorgeous females including: Gabrielle (Belinda Bauer); Marella (Deborah Pratt); Lydia (Sandra Kronemeyer); Amanda (Kandace Kuehl) and Rhoda (Leigh Walsh).
Archangel was recruited by the Agency to retrieve a top secret helicopter named Airwolf (government file No. A56-7W) that was stolen by its creator/designer, Professor Moffit (Charles Henry) who intended to sell the high-tech tactical aircraft to a foreign country.
Airwolf’s capabilities included a cruising speed of 300 knots; climbing ceiling of 82,000 feet; onboard computers with topographical and vehicle identification data banks; four 30mm front mounted machine guns; two 40mm wing cannons; and bottom launched heat seeking missiles (Hellfire, Redeye, Copperheads, Sidewinder, Phoenix, Maverick, & Shrike).
During the theft of Airwolf, Moffit fired missiles into a bunker where Archangel was situated. The explosion damaged Archangel’s leg, leaving him with a limp. He also lost the sight in his left eye.
To retrieve the helicopter, Archangel assigned former Vietnam veteran pilot Stringfellow Hawke (Jan-Michael Vincent) to recover it. However, when he got it, he refused to give it back until the US War Department stepped up their efforts to find his brother who had been listed missing in action in Vietnam. Hawke hid Airwolf in a large mountain crater in the Southwest desert area called “The Valley Of The Gods.”
While Archangel negotiated the recapture of Airwolf, he used Hawke and Airwolf for a variety of secret missions.
The only others who knew of Airwolf’s location were Hawke’s employer, Dominic Santini (Ernest Borgnine), a veteran helicopter pilot and later in the series Caitlin O’Shannessey (Jean Bruce Scott).
Note: The USA Cable network continued the series with a cast of four new actors when CBS dropped the show in 1986. This revised program featured Stringfellow’s long-lost brother, Saint John Hawke (Barry Van Dyke), Dominic’s niece, Jo Anne “Jo” Santini (Michele Scarabelli), Major Mike Rivers (Geraint Wyn Davies), and Archangel’s replacement, Jason Locke (Anthony Sherwood) now working for “The Company.”
The biblical archangels in Christian beliefs were: Chamuel, Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Zadkiel, and Zophiel.
