Modern Family/ABC/2009+ (Kidney Dysplasia)
Actress Sarah Hyland revealed in May of 2012 that she was diagnosed with kidney (renal) dysplasia at age 9 and received a kidney transplant from her father in April 2012, at age 21.
Sarah plays Haley Dunphy, the ditzy teenage daughter of Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) on the ABC comedy series MODERN FAMILY set in Los Angeles, California.
She has guest starred on TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL (1994), LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY (2005) and twice on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT (1999). During second appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Hothouse (2009) she portrayed “Jennifer Banks”, a student at a school for the gifted who kills her roommate in a drug fueled rage.
Hyland is involved with the Lopez Foundation that sends kids with kidney disease away to camp so they will experience overnight sleep-away camp. When Hyland was a child she was deprived of such an experience because of health issues.
Note: Kidney Dysplasia (or Renal Dysplasia) means that a kidney does not fully develop in the womb. The affected kidney does not have normal function – which means that it does not work as well as a normal kidney. It is usually smaller than usual, and may have some cysts, which are like sacs filled with liquid.
