APPLE PIE/ABC/1978 (Blind)
Grandpa Hollyhock (Jack Gilford), a loudmouthed, senile, old blind man who answered a classified ad in the Kansas City Gazette in Kansas City, Missouri circa 1933.
The newspaper ad was placed by Ginger Nell Hollyhock (Rue McClanahan), a lonely woman who wanted a family. As she said, “Why shouldn’t you have the right to pick your own relatives.”
Ginger’s ad also netted a daughter and a son (Caitlin O’Heaney and Derrel Maurey).
Grandpa Hollyhock complained about politics especially, the Roosevelt Administration and his inability to read the newspaper funnies (he “smells” them).
