THE HONEYMOONERS/CBS/1955-56 (Injured Thigh)
(Art Carney/costar) Best remembered for his role as Ed Norton, a wacky New York City sewer worker on THE HONEYMOONERS, Carney was wounded in July of 1944 when he was shipped overseas to France as a US Army Infantryman. He sustained an injury to his thigh from a piece of shrapnel while setting up a machine gun.
Consequently, he spent nine months recuperating in a hospital. His wound permanently shortened his right leg by three-quarters of an inch.
Years later, Carney appeared as The Archer, a super villain on the fantasy series BATMAN/ABC/1966-68 ; and as James “The Weasel” Cavanaugh on the domestic comedy THE CAVANAUGHS/CBS/1986-89.
In 1974, Art Carney won an Oscar in the Best Actor category for his role in the motion picture “Harry and Tonto.” about Harry Combes, a man in his seventies who embarks on a cross-country journey with his cat Tonto after his apartment building in Manhattan is demolished.
